Now, I still teach an occasional class in China through Zoom and it’s very convenient to have them pay me in WeChat so I can keep a bit of Chinese money there to buy my beloved Chinese tea. It has almost entirely replaced debit or credit cards in everyday casual spending use in China. It is easily used to pay friends back and even had a function for splitting checks at restaurants. For years it was almost my sole way of paying for anything at the grocery store or anywhere. Chinese are quite skittish about such things and WeChat has proven itself to the point that basically the whole nation uses it for everything–in fact, you can hardly function in China without it. If you lose your password, you’re locked out of your account until you can recover it. Why? Think of this whole thing as a lifeline. To change the email account that is linked to WeChat, you must have a verified telephone number associated with it.
